Residential Architects in North Shields, Newcastle and the North East
House of Grandeur is an architecture practice based in North Shields, designing individual homes across Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, and the wider North East.
We work with homeowners to create extensions, renovations, alterations and bespoke new-build homes that respond to the character of the property, its surroundings and the way our clients want to live and work.
If you're considering an extension, renovation or new home, get in touch to discuss your project.
Architecture That Starts With You
Every home and every client is different.
Our design process begins by understanding what you want to achieve, what isn't working with your existing home and what opportunities the property and site present. We then develop the architectural design around those requirements, considering space, light, materials, views, landscape, sustainability and the practical realities of construction.
House Extensions
Extending an existing home can provide significantly more space while allowing you to remain in a location you already know and love.
We design rear, side, roof and more complex extensions for homes in the local area and further afield. Our recent projects in Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and North Shields demonstrate different approaches to extending existing properties while maintaining a strong relationship between the original building, new architecture and surroundings.
Renovation and Refurbishment
Renovation is often about making better use of what already exists.
We look at the whole house rather than simply adding floor area, considering circulation, natural light, connections between rooms and the relationship between the house and garden.
Where appropriate, extensions and internal alterations can be combined to create a home that works significantly better without losing its original character.
Bespoke New-Build Homes
A new home provides the opportunity to design from first principles.
We consider the site, orientation, views, landscape, materials and environmental conditions from the beginning, creating architecture that belongs to its setting. Our Northumberland work demonstrates our approach to sustainable new-build architecture and the use of local sourced and natural materials.
Period and Heritage Properties
Older properties often contain qualities that should be retained, while their layouts and facilities may no longer meet contemporary requirements.
Our approach is to understand the existing building before deciding how it should change. This is particularly important when working with period properties and homes within conservation areas, where the relationship between the existing building and any new intervention requires careful consideration.

Sustainable Residential Architecture
Sustainability is integrated into our design process rather than treated as an additional feature.
We consider orientation, daylight, fabric performance, material choices, energy use, landscape and long-term adaptability as part of the wider architectural design. The aim is to create homes that are comfortable, efficient and enjoyable to live in, while responding appropriately to their environmental context.
